In an environment where women are denied a voice, is it any wonder that outdated attitudes persist? It starts from the top, with male producers, directors, editors, authors and publishers alike assuming that women are there for their entertainment, regardless of whether or not those women are fans or authors themselves, and the culture colludes in this harassment by painting the perpetrators as awkward victims of female sexuality.
The only thing worse than being a geek is pretending to be one for attention. Dig deep, dig to the roots, dig until you know things that others you admire in the subject matter don't know or can't do. Then go ahead and proudly label yourself a geeky girl. Perhaps the way to bring meaning back to the geek way of life is to keep it on the down-low; lower our freak flags, go quiet, and communicate through heads-up displays.

As a geek girl myself, I've been accused of wearing a "Star Wars" shirt to "get attention from guys who actually care if Han shot first. I've even been branded a panderer for saying I liked Godzilla, supposedly just to get a date with a man cosplaying as Gamera. Lately it seems elements of the geek community have become a lot less of a welcome wagon and more of a judgmental Jedi Council that refuses to let newbies in, especially if they happen to be girls.
In a community once known for celebrating outcasts and underdogs, it sometimes now seems like you have to take some sort of Voight-Kampff Test to prove your geekdom is legit. Pretentious females who have labeled themselves as a "geek girl" figured out that guys will pay a lot of attention to them if they proclaim they are reading comics or playing video games. It was raised by Joe Peacock in an article entitled "Booth babes need not apply": note booth babes is a bit of a misnomer in relation to his actual article. There is a growing chorus of frustration in the geek community with - and there's no other way to put this - pretty girls pretending to be geeks for attention.
San Diego Comic-Con is the largest vehicle, but it's hardly the only convention populated with "hot chicks" wearing skimpy outfits simply to get a bunch of gawking geeks' heads to turn, just to satisfy their hollow egos.
